Beware the Cookie Cutter

No one is exactly like anyone else, and that’s a good thing! Because we are all unique, it is important to remember that we should not compare ourselves to anyone else, which just either undermines our self-worth or overinflates our ego.

“Comparisons make you feel superior or inferior, neither serve a useful purpose.”

Jane Travis

We are each blessed with a blend of talents and interests that influence our perspective. When we share our gifts with others, it reflects our special outlook on life. Our life experiences and the choices we make shape us into who we are. If we don’t like how things are going in our life, we are free to make changes that will point us in the direction we want to go. This gives meaning and purpose to our lives, so we can fully express our true, authentic selves.

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

Oscar Wilde

When we fall into the traps of comparing ourselves to others, following the crowd, or just trying to be outrageous so other people notice us because we feel invisible otherwise, we are not being our authentic selves, and this is not doing us or anyone else any good. It’s important to remember that we are not meant to be exactly like someone else. We can emulate characteristics that we want to incorporate into our lives as we are working on self-development, but we must remember to embrace our own original, unique, special self.

“The only person you should try to be better than is who you were yesterday.”

Wayne Dyer
