Letting Go of Perfectionism
People often think that perfectionism is a trait that fosters excellence and is a requirement for attaining success; yet it can be a double-edged sword, propelling us toward high achievement while simultaneously trapping us in a cycle of unrealistic expectations, chronic dissatisfaction, self-criticism, and fear of failure.
“In order to go on living, one must try to escape the death involved in perfectionism.” – Hannah Arendt
When we set out to achieve a goal, we can easily get overwhelmed if we look only at the whole project and everything required for it to be successful. If we strive for an ideal standard that we always fall short of, something we can’t possibly live up to, it is like being in a prison of our own making, always feeling like we’re not good enough. That is why it is important to break down larger tasks into manageable steps, otherwise we would use this as an excuse to put off either starting or finishing the project.
One thing is for sure, we will make mistakes now and then, and it is essential that we practice self-compassion and view mistakes as valuable learning opportunities and steppingstones to success. We all have the ability to grow and improve through effort and persistence. This is why we should learn to cultivate a growth mindset. This means we actively challenge and reframe negative thoughts and self-criticism with positive affirmations, focus on progress not perfection, and celebrate our small victories.
“Perfectionism is self-abuse of the highest order.” – Anne Wilson Schaef
By adopting these practices and nurturing a positive mindset, we can transform our relationship with imperfection, viewing it as an opportunity for growth and self-evolution. The journey to self-acceptance starts with understanding that true beauty and strength lie in our imperfections, not in the pursuit of an unattainable ideal.
“Mistakes are proof that you are trying.” – Jennifer Lim
