One Thing at a Time

While it may seem counter-intuitive, multitasking can reduce efficiency and the quality of our work. However, by focusing our full attention on only one thing at a time (single tasking), we can spend our time more efficiently, and we’ll actually be able to get more done.

We can access our powers of focus and concentration and not allow ourselves to be at the mercy of whatever is going on around us, or at the whims of whomever is vying for our attention. We can direct our attention mindfully, wherever and however we choose to do so.

“You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks.”

Winston Churchill

It’s important to prioritize what is most pressing so we can make progress on what we want to achieve. We often have what feels like a million things to do, so taking a few minutes to rate these tasks can help us get started. Then, we can create a workspace that limits interruptions by setting boundaries for work time which helps us stay on task. Allocate specific blocks of time for different tasks and stick to them. This structured approach helps maintain focus and improves productivity.

At the end of each day, it is good to reflect on what worked and what didn’t in maintaining focus. By implementing a few changes in the way we approach completing our to-do list, and adjusting our strategies accordingly, we can get more done in less time.

“Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem. We all have twenty-four-hour days.”

Zig Ziglar
